    I’m sorry that yet again an author feels compelled to include sexual intimacy alongside emotional intimacy. Actually denigrates the millions of close female friendships with healthy boundaries. So sad.

    Reading this book was like watching paint dry. I don’t think it’s well written and the characters aren’t compelling enough to even want to continue. A better alternative would be “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

    Book condition was fabulous, but in ordering somehow I ended up with a

    duplicate order that was not acceptable and it took too long to arrive;

    plus I feel the shipping and handling fees are too high.IT was stated on

    the site when I ordered that if I ordered that day I would have the book

    by Dec. 29th. That was NOT the case it took until the 4th of Jan to arrive and if we are paying that much for S/H the books should come first

    class and much faster

    Interesting to learn about women in China in the 19th century and the whole foot binding tradition, but if I weren’t trying to finish it for a book club, I don’t know whether I would have kept at it. I didn’t find either of the leading female characters very compelling.

    It’s obvious the author did a lot of research & used it as the shaky framework on which to build a very flimsy plot. It’s poorly written as well; the foreshadowing couldn’t be clumsier, the descriptions are cliche-ridden, the characters are mostly stick figures, & the character development is non-existent–Lily’s change of heart at the end is the exception that proves the rule. My book group’s opinions were split, but we did have a very good discussion about women’s roles in different cultures & how culture–including our own–controls people’s lives. If it weren’t for that, I’d have given the book one star.
